The short list: who leads in 2026

Forbes tracks the fortunes of public figures continuously. Its real-time estimates move with share prices, so the order below can change from one week to the next. On October 24, 2026, these were the largest fortunes held by Indian-born or Indian-origin billionaires who are U.S. citizens, from the Forbes profiles we reviewed. It is not an exhaustive census. Forbes' own lists remain the authoritative ranking.

The list moves with the market. When Forbes published its America's Richest Immigrants ranking in September 2026, Vinod Khosla was the highest-ranked India-born billionaire, at an estimated $13.9 billion2. In late October, Chaudhry's Zscaler stake put him ahead3.

What HeyAlbert data shows

Technology dominates the top of the list

Most of these fortunes come from founding or running technology companies. Chaudhry founded Zscaler in 2008 and took it public in 2018. Forbes estimates that he and his family own around 35% of the company3. Jayshree Ullal has led Arista Networks since 2008 and owns around 2% of it, according to Forbes5. Romesh Wadhwani first became a billionaire in 2000, when i2 Technologies bought his software firm Aspect Development for $9.3 billion7. Several newer names, including Astera Labs cofounders Sanjay Gajendra and Jitendra Mohan, made their fortunes from AI-era semiconductors13.

That pattern matches the broader story of Indian American founders behind high-value startups. It also matches the outsized role of equity compensation in building executive wealth. Founders' stakes are usually what create billion-dollar fortunes. Salaries rarely do.

Investors, operators and professional CEOs

Not every fortune on the list comes from founding a company. Kavitark Ram Shriram was an early Google backer and still sits on Alphabet's board8. Hemant Taneja runs General Catalyst, a venture firm Forbes describes as a $43 billion fund9. Rajiv Jain cofounded the asset manager GQG Partners in 201610. Rakesh Gangwal ran US Airways before cofounding the Indian budget airline IndiGo in 20066.

Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai are rarer still: professional CEOs whose company stock made them billionaires, at about $1.4 billion and $1.5 billion respectively19,18. Our guide to how much prominent Indian American CEOs are paid explains how that works. For the investor side, see the leading Indian American venture capitalists.

Older industries still matter

IT services built some of the earliest Indian American fortunes. Bharat Desai and Neerja Sethi founded Syntel from their apartment in Troy, Michigan, in 1980. The French IT company Atos bought Syntel for $3.4 billion in 201817. Raj Sardana's Atlanta-based Innova Solutions began as a staffing firm and remains owned by his family15. Many more families built wealth in hospitality, healthcare and real estate below the billionaire line. Those fortunes rarely appear on public rich lists. Our IT services and hotel ownership research covers them.

How fast the group is growing

India was already the top birthplace on Forbes' 2025 immigrant list, with 12 billionaires. In 2026 it reached 19, ahead of Israel and Taiwan with 11 each1. The seven new India-born entrants included General Catalyst's Hemant Taneja, Palantir's Shyam Sankar and Astera Labs' two cofounders2. Across all countries, the 2026 list counted a record 144 immigrant billionaires worth a combined $2.2 trillion, up from 125 and $1.3 trillion in 20251.

Billionaires are only the visible tip of a much larger group. For the wider picture, see our estimate of how many Indian American millionaires and billionaires there are. Our profile of the richest Indian American women covers Ullal, Sethi and others.

Reading these numbers carefully

Net worth estimates for public figures rely on stakes in listed companies, which are disclosed in filings. Forbes then values private assets and adjusts for estimated sales and taxes. The figures are estimates, not audited balance sheets. Private holdings, real estate and family trusts make some fortunes larger or smaller than they look. The list also covers only people whose wealth is public enough to estimate. It says little about the much larger number of affluent Indian American households with private businesses, medical practices or real-estate portfolios.
